Ziv Sherzer, Hydrogeologe, Bike Guide, Expeditionsleiter, Fotograf für National Geographic, Lebenskünstler und hauptberuflich Reisender, führte uns (NoMan + NoSane) eine Woche lang durch die Negev-Wüste in Israel (siehe Bike&Hike im Negev).

Eine gemeinsame Abenteuer-Reise durch Jordanien später, erzählte Ziv von seinen nächsten Plänen: einem Charity-Projekt in der Mongolei und einer Bike-Tour in eine der spektakulärsten und einsamsten Gegenden der Welt. Von 1. bis 11. September startet seine Mountainbike-Expedition nach Ladakh, dem einstigen "versteckten Königreich” zwischen Himalaya und Karakorum.

Mountain-Bike Expedition To The Hidden Corners of Ladakh Kingdom

1st-11th September 2012

For the first time ever, a world expedition of mountain-bikes is about to head to one of the most remote corners in the world, way up behind the Himalayan mountains, to the ancient secret kingdom of Ladakh.

Ladakh - a region of mystical beauty, is locked between the Himalaya mountains in the south, and the Tibetan plateau on the north. The region is dominated by high barren mountains, part of the Zanskar and Ladakh rang (6000+), alpine lakes and narrow valleys scattered with old monasteries, green fields, apricot trees and palaces hanging on top of cliffs, memory for some of the old kingdoms who once ruled the area.

As we land in the capital Lhe, we will have the privilege to participate in the biggest festival of Ladakh, starting on the 1st of September and will last for 30 days.

Continuing the acclimatization to the high altitude (Lhe- 3500m') we will head to the small village of Wanla, deep in the Zanskar mountains, from where we will make a short half day trek to the old monastery of Lamayuru.
After we have rested and acclimatize, we will take off to the real journey... to the lower Gorge of the Indus river. We will ride along ancient roads and trails through small villages and monasteries, a journey along one of the most spectacular routs in Ladakh.

After two hard days we will reach the area of the "Dards” - the ”flower people” of the Dahu Valley, located very close to the Pakistani border. From there we will ride into the remote valley, where once stood the great power of the "Chiktan” kingdom and return for another comfortable night at Lamayuru. The next day will be in some way a bit different from what we got used to up to now. Riding the vehicles into the Zanskar Gorge, we will reach the small village of Chiling from where we will get on the river and raft down on the white water of the Zanskar river up to its Junction with the Indus river near the village of Nimoo.

The second part of the expedition will take us to the westernmost region of Ladakh, to the high altitude lakes (4500m') and the nomadic people near the border with china. We will climb with our bikes gradually to the source of the induce, to reach Lake Tsomoriri at altitude of 4600m' where we will set our camp on the shore of this beautiful lake. Continuing from there we will pay a visit (and our duty to society) to a very unique school who hosts under dormitory conditions kids of nomadic families from all around the area. After visiting the kids of the nomad people we will ride on to the salted "Tso-Kar” lake. Scattered around the lake during summer time, are the nomadic "Changpa” people, who live in traditional woolen tents and have hundreds of livestock to take care of in the long frozen winters and short summers.
From the High altitude Tso-kar lake we will continue riding along the lake between marmots and wild-ass and reach the Lhe Manali road to pass one of the highest motor pass in the world - " Taklang laa" pass and continue for a worm night at Lhe, from where we will fly the next morning back to New-Delhi and home.

* The expedition is open to anybody who is brave enough to ride on the edge of the cliff above the Indus river.

These are hands of a 98 years old nomadic woman who lives in the area of Lake Tsomoriri in eastern Ladakh. when we asked her what did she do during the first IndoChina war at 1946 that lasted 8 years and during the Sino-Indian war at 1962, she said she diden't even hear of it... when we asked her what was the most exciting thing she can remember from her life, she thought for a few minutes and told us: when she was 19 years old, she took some sheep and goats to sell down at Manali, at the other side of the mountains, where she drunk for the first time tea with sugar. in fact, it was the first time she ever tasted sugar...
